Teacher guide: how to create a quiz that belongs to a topic, choose its tasks from the quiz task bank and set a pass threshold – and how to manage quiz tasks.

1 What a practice quiz is
A practice quiz is a quiz that belongs to a topic. Its questions are picked from the quiz task bank: you choose ready-made tasks from categories, either directly or drawn at random.
A practice quiz differs from an exam: an exam is a standalone item linked to a course in the basic info. A practice quiz, by contrast, is built inside a topic and consists of tasks from the quiz task bank. The student app checks the practice quiz immediately, so in the course editor it is called an automatic practice quiz.
Practice quizzes are added from the topic’s 📋 Quizzes card. Open the course, go to the Topics tab, choose the topic and its Quizzes card. The panel has two sections: ⚡ Automatic practice quizzes (practice quizzes, this guide) and 🧪 Graded quizzes (hybrid quizzes). You can create several quizzes in one topic.
The topic’s Quizzes panel: automatic practice quizzes and graded quizzes (hybrid quizzes) in the same view. Each practice quiz is its own row: name, deadline, lock and action buttons (the number on Requirements = how many conditions are set).
Press “+ Add quiz”. The app asks “What kind of quiz?” – choose ⚡ Automatic practice quizzes, and a new quiz row appears in the panel.
Choosing the quiz type. A practice quiz is “Automatic practice quizzes”.
Note: the course must be saved before you build the quiz. Otherwise the app asks you to save the course first.
3 Quiz row actions
Each quiz row has a name, a deadline and action buttons:
Deadline + 🔒 Lock after deadline – prevents new attempts after the deadline.
Quiz – opens the quiz builder (name, settings, tasks). This is the main content of the quiz.
🔒 Requirements – unlock conditions; the number on the button shows how many conditions there are (see section 6).
✎ Rename – changes the quiz name.
🗑 Delete – removes the quiz from the topic.
4 Quiz settings
The “Quiz” button opens the builder. At the top you set the quiz’s basic details and passing.
Quiz settings: name, instructions, pass threshold (here 60 %) and maximum number of attempts. When a pass threshold is set, the maximum number of attempts cannot be set.
Quiz Name – required.
Exam Instructions – instructions shown at the start of the quiz.
Pass threshold – Default (80 %), Percentage (your own %) or Minimum correct tasks (number).
Maximum number of attempts – empty = unlimited. Available only when the pass threshold is Default (the best result then counts). If you choose Percentage or Minimum correct tasks, the field is locked.
5 Choosing tasks for the quiz
The quiz tasks are picked from the quiz task bank in the selection panel. Choose a category, pick the tasks and add them to the quiz.
📋 Tasks: choose a category and tick the tasks (Search and “Select All” help). When you move the mouse over a task, its preview and correct answer are shown below.🎲 Random: category and the number of tasks to draw → “Add selected”. The Selected tasks list has three directly chosen tasks and a random draw from the Extreme values category, each with its own points.
📋 Tasks – you choose specific tasks (everyone gets the same task).
🎲 Random – the given number of tasks is drawn from the category for the quiz; different students may get different tasks.
Category – a category in the task bank (or “All tasks”). A random draw also includes the subcategories.
Count – the number of tasks to draw (only in 🎲 Random mode).
Default points – the points the added tasks get; you can change them per task in the list.
Add selected – moves the selections to the “Selected tasks” list, where you can edit the points, reorder tasks with the ↑ ↓ arrows or by dragging, and remove a task with ✕.
The tasks come from the quiz task bank. If the task you want is not there, add it to the bank first (section 7).
6 Requirements (unlocking)
The “🔒 Requirements” button on the quiz row opens the conditions that must be met before the quiz opens for the student. As with the visibility conditions of course links, you can for example require that a certain task has been done before the quiz can be started. You can choose from the course content topic by topic: the topic material (opened), other quizzes (passed) and course tasks (submitted or passed). A course task is passed when the teacher has given it at least 50 % of the points or its AI review has been approved; for a task graded as approved or rejected the level is Approved by the teacher. The number of conditions set is shown on the button.
Without requirements, the quiz is available to the student right away (within the deadline and any lock).
7 Managing quiz tasks
The quiz tasks live in the quiz task bank. It is now the 🧪 Quiz tasks tab of the Task banks view. You can get there in two ways:
from the “Manage Quiz Tasks” card at the top of the Courses view (subtitle “Organise assignments”) – the card opens the Task banks view directly on the Quiz tasks tab
from the navigation menu “+ Add tools” → Task banks and the 🧪 Quiz tasks tab.
The action cards of the Courses view. “Manage Quiz Tasks” opens the Task banks view on the Quiz tasks tab.
In the bank, tasks are organised into categories. Click a category heading to show its tasks; the number shows how many tasks it has. You can create, rename, move and delete categories, add new tasks and import tasks from a Moodle XML file.
Task banks → Quiz tasks: file picker and the Import, Add Category and Add Task buttons; below, the categories (Derivatives open) and their tasks with task types.
Category – tasks are organised into categories (folders), from which they are chosen for a quiz.
Add Category – creates a category; if you give a parent category path, it becomes a subcategory.
Buttons on a category row: ✎ rename, ⇄ move under another category, ✕ delete the category with its tasks.
Add Task – asks for the task type (STACK, multiple choice with one or several correct answers, cloze, matching) and opens the task for editing; the category is set in the task details.
Import – first choose the XML file in the file field, then press Import. Tasks are imported in Moodle XML format; the app shows the categories in the file so you can trim parts of the path, and you confirm the import with the Import button. The import supports STACK, multiple-choice, cloze and matching tasks.
The tasks in the quiz task bank are available in all practice quizzes. They can also be imported into a hybrid quiz (“📚 Import from bank”; multiple choice, true/false, cloze and matching – no STACK tasks). These bank tasks cannot be used in an exam (an exam uses its own question bank).
