1 What a hybrid quiz is

A hybrid quiz is a new task type in which one quiz can contain a mix of four different question types. A single attempt therefore combines machine-checked questions and tasks graded by hand.

At quiz level you can switch on forced order (questions open in order, no going back) and set a time limit per question. The whole quiz is graded and published to the student at once, as a single whole – there is no revision round.

In short: auto-graded questions are scored by the machine (you can override the points), essays and videos you grade by hand – all in the same view.

2 Where to find it

You create a hybrid quiz in the course editor from a topic's 📋 Quizzes card. The card's panel has two sections: ⚡ Automatic practice quizzes (practice quizzes) and 🧪 Graded quizzes (hybrid quizzes). You add a new quiz with the shared “+ Add quiz” button, which asks what kind of quiz you want to make.

The topic's Quizzes card opens a panel with both automatic practice quizzes and graded quizzes (hybrid quizzes). The graded quiz rows show the status, number of questions and points; a published quiz's row has “Open”, a draft's row has “Edit”.

When you press “+ Add quiz”, the app asks “What kind of quiz?”. Choose 🧪 Graded quizzes and the hybrid quiz creation form opens. (⚡ Automatic practice quizzes creates a practice quiz, see Practice quiz.)

Submissions are graded in the “Hybrid quizzes” section of the navigation (in the “+ Add tools” → Feedback & assessment menu; you can pin it to the navigation), see section 8.

Note: save the course first. Before it has been saved, the “Graded quizzes” option is greyed out and shows the text “Save the course first, then you can add a graded quiz.”

3 Quiz basic details

When you choose “Graded quizzes”, the creation form opens. Start with the quiz's basic details at the top of the form.

Example: an auto-graded quiz question

In an auto-graded question you choose the question type from a drop-down list. The form shows type-specific instructions on a blue background and adapts the fields to your choice.

An open auto-graded question (multiple choice, one correct): title, points and time limit, the blue type-specific instructions, question type, correct answer, question text, options, and the model solution with its visibility. The row header shows the points and time limit and the arrow and delete buttons.

The question types and the format of their correct answer:

Matching with images new

Matching pairs are now written on their own rows (previously in the format left = right). Next to each side there is a “🖼 Image” button for attaching an image. An added image is shown as a thumbnail, and 🖼✕ removes it; 🗑 removes the whole pair.

Matching pairs row by row: here the left side is the graph of a function (image, 🖼✕ removes it) and the right side the expression of the derivative (text, “🖼 Image” would add an image). Below, “+ Add pair”.

When the right-hand sides have images, the student sees them as a gallery labelled with letters (A, B, C…) and chooses a letter from the drop-down list. Scoring is proportional (correct pairs / all pairs). When you save, the app checks that no pair is missing text or an image on either side and that texts on the same side differ from each other.

Multiple-choice set new

In a multiple-choice set, the student sees several multiple-choice questions on one page under the same material. Choose “Multiple-choice set (several questions on one page)” as the question type of the quiz question, write the shared material or instructions in the question text and add sub-items with the “+ Add sub-item” button.

The sub-items of a multiple-choice set: each has its own question, options, correct answers, “Several correct” and points.
The sub-items of a multiple-choice set: each has its own question, options, correct answers, “Several correct” and points.
Listening task: when you want an audio clip with several multiple-choice questions below it, choose 🎧 Listening/material as the question type, “Embedded audio (short)” as the material, “Auto-graded (multiple choice etc.)” as the answer mode and Multiple-choice set as the question type. This way you can also limit the number of plays.

In grading, the answer to a multiple-choice set is shown sub-item by sub-item with ✓/✗ marks, and pairs with images are shown as thumbnails.

5 Per-question settings

Each question has its own settings regardless of its type. Question rows can be expanded and collapsed (click the title), so even a long quiz stays manageable. The right edge of the row shows the points and any time limit.

Essay question settings: points, time limit, prompt, material link, model solution and its visibility.

Protecting model solutions: when visibility is “Only with evaluation”, the model solution and the correct answer are removed from the published quiz package – they never reach the student's computer before you publish the grading.

6 Import from bank

With the “📚 Import from bank” button you can pick ready-made auto-graded questions from the quiz task bank (the same bank that practice quizzes use; it is managed on the Task banks → 🧪 Quiz tasks tab). Browse the folders and add a task to the quiz with the “+ Add to quiz” button.

The bank browser with the Derivatives folder open: supported types (multiple choice, cloze, matching) are shown with “+ Add to quiz” buttons; others (here two STACK tasks) are hidden and their number is shown.

Quiz questions you create in the editor are saved automatically to the quiz task bank in a folder named after the quiz, so you can reuse them in other quizzes. The exceptions are cloze tasks and multiple-choice sets, which are not saved to the bank.

A task imported from the bank gets 1 point – set the points yourself. The task is labelled “📚 from bank”.

7 Saving and publishing

At the bottom of the form there are three buttons. You can save a draft and continue later, or publish the quiz to students.

“Save” keeps the quiz as a draft · “Save and publish” brings the quiz to students.

Reverting a published quiz to a draft

A published quiz is locked. If you want to edit it, press “🔓 Revert to draft” in the lock notice.

Warning: “Revert to draft” permanently deletes all student submissions and evaluations both from the cloud and from this computer. This cannot be undone.

8 Grading submissions

Grading is done in the “Hybrid quizzes” section of the navigation (the “+ Add tools” → Feedback & assessment menu). First press “Sync submissions”, which fetches new submissions and runs the automatic scoring. The list is structured: course → quiz → submissions, ungraded ones first. With the Status menu you show ungraded (default), graded or all submissions; ↻ Refresh reloads the list.

The submission list with expandable levels (course → quiz → submissions), Status filter All. The course row shows the numbers of ungraded submissions and submissions and “⇅ Sync submissions”. Clicking a submission row opens the grading view.

Grading view

The submission opens in a view where the questions and answers are shown one below the other as separate cards. For auto-graded questions, the points given by the machine are already in the points field and can be overridden. You give points and feedback for essay and video answers by hand (a video answer opens from the ▶ button on its card). Expand all / Collapse all at the top open or close the cards, and ← Back to list returns to the submission list.

Each card also shows the time used and a note if the per-question timer locked the answer (⏱ Timer locked this answer). An overridden automatic score is marked “edited”.
