1 What the Message center is

The Message center is the teacher’s one-to-one communication with students. It opens from the “Message center” card in the top bar (Private & group messages). The Message center has two tabs: Private messages (conversations with students) and Group Messages (announcements to courses). This guide covers private messages. Messages are organised by participant: you choose a student and see their message threads.

Message center→ Choose a participant→ Conversation→ Reply / Start new
The Message center is for one-to-one communication. Messages to a whole group are sent on the Group Messages tab of the same view – see the Group messages guide.

2 Overview

The view has two parts: the participant search on the left, and the selected participant’s conversations, messages and message writing on the right.

3 Choosing a recipient

First choose the student you want to message. At the top of the sidebar are a filter and a search.

Before you choose a recipient, the main window reads “Select a recipient to view messages.”

4 Conversations and messages

Once you have chosen a participant, you see their conversations (message threads). Click a conversation to open its messages in chronological order.

5 Replying and starting a new conversation

You can reply to the open conversation or start a completely new one.

New conversation: enter a subject and a message, and send.
New conversation: enter a subject and a message, and send.
Note: if the student has left the course, the conversation can still be read, but replying is not possible (“The student has left this course. The conversation stays readable, but replies are no longer possible.”).
